On June 5, 2018, she finished first in the nonpartisan open primary, [27] and then defeated Republican Greg Conlon in the November 6 election. [28] On January 7, 2019, she was sworn in as the first woman of color and the second CPA to ever serve as California State Treasurer .
Ma’s opponent, Greg Conlon, is a retired CPA who spent most of his career at the Arthur Anderson accounting firm, which no longer exists. He sat on the Public Utilities Commission, including a stint as chairman, during Gov. Pete Wilson’s administration, a time when the PUC was less consumer friendly than it ought to have been.
