While state offices and presidential candidates have rushed to criticize Michigan's handling of the Flint water crisis, the legacy of environmental injustice and racism in the once-thriving city stretches far beyond lead pipes and discolored tap water.
Consequently, this study examines how the American government plays some roles in the occurrence of environmental racism, that is, the Flint Water Crisis (FWC) in Michigan. Racial capitalism theory is used as a theoretical lens in this study.
Some tests showed the water in Flint had more than 100 times the legal level of lead. This is just one example of the devastating impacts of environmental racism across the United States.
First, although Flint is a majority-Black city, residents of all racial and ethnic groups were negatively impacted by the water crisis, which is not the case in an immigration raid or a police shooting. For this reason, it is possible that the public did not attribute the FWC to racism.
