Oak galls are abnormal plant growths found on foliage and twigs that are produced by small oak gall wasps. Shapes of galls vary from spherical to urn-shaped to star-shaped to fuzzy. Pruning twigs that host oak galls is a simple and effective way to help stop the cycle.
19 Ιουν 2023 · Most leaf galls on oak cause little or no harm to the health of a tree. However, twig or branch galls may cause injury or even death to a heavily infested tree. Two common species of twig gall-producing insects are the horned oak gall wasp, Callirhytis cornigera, and the gouty oak gall wasp, C. quercuspunctata.
4 Αυγ 2023 · Oak trees, majestic and resilient, are often adorned with peculiar growths known as oak galls. These abnormal formations, caused by tiny oak gall wasps, come in various shapes and colors and house the eggs and larvae of these insects.
The appearance of galls on an oak tree are harmless some such as the spangle and silk button galls might be mistaken for other insects such as scale insects. Gall wasps cause no long term ill effects to oak trees and are part of the biodiversity a healthy tree supports.
Oak bullet galls are common twig galls on our native bur oaks. Bullet galls are hard, round, and pea-to-knuckle-sized, and usually are most apparent by August. Jumping oak galls grow on leaves and look a bit like small, round seeds or BBs. The galls fall off the oak, carrying the larva with them.
Oaks are one of the most susceptible, being host to over 500 different wasps, aphids, mites, and midges that cause galls on leaves and twigs. Plant gall damage is usually an aesthetic problem and is not considered serious. Affected trees ordinarily show little injury, although foliage of young trees is sometimes completely deformed.
