The gerund is the “-ing” form of the verb, when it is used as a noun e.g. running, sleeping, working etc. The infinitive (sometimes called the full infinitive ) is the base form of the verb with the word “to” e.g. to run, to sleep, to work .
Prepositions are followed by objects, so an -ing form following a preposition is functioning as a noun phrase, making it a gerund. If before is a conjunction, however, an -ing form following it will not be an object but rather a verb form, making it a participle.
