13 Ιουλ 2012 · @IlmariKaronen answer is correct but assumes a little bit of gimp knowledge, so I am writing a step by step guide here, so it's easier to follow for people with zero gimp knowledge. The guide assumes the alpha channel is to be found as a component of another image. First let's copy the alpha channel to be used later with the following steps:

13 Ιαν 2015 · A modern way of achieving this effect in your specific case is opening your image in the latest version of Gimp and from the top menu go to Colors -> Color to Alpha. Within that panel is Color is set to white, Gimp will attempt to replace all the white pixel areas with transparency. It's at least worth trying out.

Try color selecting the stroke with the Magic Wand (adjust the tolerance at the top to refine the selection) then using any of the other selection tools like the Rectangle Marquee tool for example, hold shift and select the area within.
1 Φεβ 2022 · If you want an animation in Gimp, it's either GIF: very well supported, but limited to 256 colors and no partial opacity, WebP: supported by all browsers now (but server software may not handle them correctly), has no color or opacity limit, and can do lossless (PNG-like) or lossy (JPEG-like) compression.

From the Filters menu in the main Gimp window (or Xtns in earlier versions), select Batch Process... to bring up the DBP window. In the Input page, Add your files and click Open; In Processing, select Resize; Choose PNG as Output; This question in Superuser has some other options as well.

Make sure you have Gimp open with an image of some sort on the canvas. Image > Guides > New Guide (By Percent). If you don't see a Script-fu dialog box, switch between active windows until you find it (in Windows use ALT-TAB). In the "Direction" drop-down choose "Vertical".
