The Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge is a historic gold dredge located in Sumpter, in the U.S. state of Oregon. Gold was discovered in Sumpter in 1862. Three gold dredges were put into service in the Sumpter Valley district between 1912 and 1934.
1 Μαΐ 2016 · Big gold nuggets were commonly found during the height of the gold rush in Eastern Oregon. During those times, when placer mining was prevailing, the placer miners discovered gold-bearing quartz ledges in the area and hard rock mining began in the Sumpter Valley and around its vicinity.
Rangers present gold panning demonstrations on weekends. Visitors can pan for their own gold too! Panning lessons are free; visitors may purchase gold flakes they find for a small fee. After visiting the dredge, you may continue on the Elkhorn Drive Scenic Byway to visit other regional attractions.

Gateway to the Blue Mountains. Sumpter, a small town buried deep in the Blue Mountains of Eastern Oregon, stands as a monument to times gone by. Gold mining dominates the history and landscape of the Sumpter Valley, with the dredge remaining as the centerpiece to that era.
Today Sumpter is a quiet mountain town that is popular with hunters in the Fall and snowmobilers in the Winter. Small scale gold mining is still practiced in the surrounding mountains. A gold dredge is restored and is on display at the Sumpter Valley State Heritage Area.
Three gold dredges worked the Powder River in Sumpter Valley between 1913 and 1954. Between them the dredges traveled more than 8 miles, extracting $10 to $12 million worth of gold.
