Halifax County was established in 1752 by English colonists from Lunenburg County. The county was named for George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax. Through the 1990 Census, South Boston was an independent city, but it became a town again and rejoined Halifax County in 1995.
Early settlement of Halifax County came primarily from two directions. Germans and Scotch-Irish migrated from the northwest from Pennsylvania, while English settlers came from Virginia's Tidewater Region to the east. The western portion of Halifax County specialized in cereal, orchard, and dairy production during the antebellum era.

When Halifax county was organized, almost every citizen in the county belonged to the Church of England, and even the sturdy Scotchman, George Currie, the first clerk, swallowed the "Oath" that was necessary to secure his citizenship, and his clerkship as well.
The Society’s mission is to bring together those persons interested in preserving historical facts, artifacts, and structures of Halifax County, Virginia. Memberships—individual, student and business—are open to all whether living in the county or another state or country.
The Halifax County Historical Society's mission is to preserve historical facts, artifacts, and structures of Halifax County and to disseminate historic information to the public. Its latest project is to complete an architectural history of the county.
