Halley's Comet is the only known short-period comet that is consistently visible to the naked eye from Earth, [16] appearing every 72–80 years, [17] though with the majority of recorded apparations (25 of 30) occuring after 75-77 years. It last appeared in the inner parts of the Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in mid-2061.
17 Οκτ 2024 · Halley’s Comet, the first comet whose return was predicted and, almost three centuries later, the first to be imaged up close by interplanetary spacecraft. In 1705 English astronomer Edmond Halley published the first catalog of the orbits of 24 comets.
Halley is often called the most famous comet because it marked the first time astronomers understood comets could be repeat visitors to our night skies. Astronomers have now linked the comet’s appearances to observations dating back more than 2,000 years.
