12 Δεκ 2007 · Since many boxes of shells still don't list velocity, dram equivalent is still relevant. Generally speaking, the higher the DrEq, the higher the pressure, and considering older firearms, I find DrEq very relevant.

25 Ιουν 2007 · 1 ¼ oz shot @ 1220 fps = 3 ¼ dram equivalent. 1 ¼ oz shot @ 1330 fps = 3 ¾ dram equivalent. The “HDCP” loading may vary by manufacturer but my understanding is that it is the fastest ATA legal velocity for 1 1/8 oz of shot in a 12 gauge load. For Federal Cartridge, it is 1235 fps.
The term “dram equivalent” is a holdover from the days when shotshells were loaded with blackpowder. Blackpowder is (or at least was) measured in “drams.” This is a weight measure, where 16 drams equal one ounce.

2 Ιαν 2020 · Dram Equivalent: This is a holdover from the turn-of-the-century transition from black to smokeless powder. Commercial ammunition was labeled by powder charge in drams. When smokeless shells came around, manufacturers stated that the new ammunition was equivalent to the old dram system.
