This is a list of Hebrew names of God in the Old Testament. Remember that God is real and these names reveal who He wants to be for you and your beloved ones. He didn’t only exist thousands of years ago, when these names were first revealed.
El Shaddai is used almost exclusively in reference to the three great patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and (according to Exodus 6:2-3) was the primary name by which God was known to the founders of Israel (the Name YHVH given to Moses suggests God's absolute self-sufficiency).
A common name of God in the Hebrew Bible is Elohim (אלהים, ʾĕlōhīm), the plural of אֱלוֹהַּ (Eloah). When Elohim refers to God in the Hebrew Bible, singular verbs are used.
In everyday English parlance, God’s name is simply “God.” In the Hebrew Bible, however, the God of Israel has a personal proper name, similar to “Susan” or “Teddy”: the four-lettered name YHWH, also known as the Tetragrammaton (Greek for “four letters”). This name is by far the most common designation for God in the Hebrew Bible.
Meaning and Derivation: Yahweh is the promised name of God. This name of God which (by Jewish tradition) is too holy to voice, is actually spelled "YHWH" without vowels. YHWH is referred to as the Tetragrammaton (which simply means "the four letters"). YHWH comes from the Hebrew letters: Yud, Hay, Vav, Hay.
The Hebrew Bible presents Israel and Judah as having only one legitimate deity, a god whose proper name is Yahweh, but one also finds a variety of names and epithets for this deity within the Bible. The generic word Elohim, “god” or “gods” (Hebrew ʾĕlōhîm), comes to serve as something of an alternate name for Yahweh in its own right.
