As they do, they pass hundreds of artifacts left behind by gold seekers. In 2022 the trail was officially designated the Chilkoot National Historic Trail.

Today the Chilkoot Trail is a 33 mile route stretching from the ghost town of Dyea, Alaska to Lake Bennett, British Columbia. This trail connects the Inside Passage and Pacific Ocean to the headwaters of the Yukon River.
It begins in the ghost town of Dyea, crossing the U.S./Canada border at the summit of Chilkoot Pass, and finishes in Bennet. The trail wanders through a diverse landscape - from wet coastal rain forest, up to rocky alpine and then to dry, lichen covered forest.
