History. Early years. This 1940s postcard shows the Kresge store in Springfield, Massachusetts (Store #26) S. S. Kresge, the founder of the company that would become Kmart, met variety-store pioneer Frank Winfield Woolworth while working as a traveling salesman and selling to all 19 of Woolworth's stores at the time.

The company was initially founded as a chain of five-and-dime stores which sold items of daily use and at low prices which were well received by the American public.
