Brief History of Sustainable Development. Though SD thinking is widely recognised to have its origins in the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, SD as a concept began to gather momentum following the 1987 Brundtland Report, Our Common Future, and the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit.
