In 1876, in a bid to compete with the powerful single-shot rifles of the time, Winchester brought out the Model 1876 (Centennial Model). While it chambered more powerful cartridges than the 1866 and 1873 models, the toggle link action was not strong enough for the then popular high-powered rounds used in Sharps or Remington single-shot rifles.

In reality, the roots of the Model 1876 go back to about 1865, when Oliver F. Winchester began to design and develop a new type of repeating rifle with removable side plates. The first rifles were shipped to the Swiss Confederation in 1866, and some other governments in 1867 and 1868.
Called the Centennial Rifle for its debut on the 100th anniversary of the Revolutionary War, Winchester attempted to accommodate the government cartridge, but the basic design features incorporated from the Model 73 weren’t strong enough to safely contain the larger 2.1-inch copper case.
