It’s similar to a regular X-ray, but measures the strength and mineral content of your bones instead of just taking pictures of them. How does the procedure work? The DXA machine sends a thin, invisible beam of low-dose x-rays with two distinct energy peaks through the bones being examined. One peak is absorbed mainly by soft tissue and the other by bone.
How it is performed. A bone density scan is a quick and painless procedure that involves lying on your back on an X-ray table so an area of your body can be scanned. No special preparations are needed. You may be able to remain fully clothed, depending on the area of your body being scanned.
Bone density tests differ from bone scans. Bone scans require an injection beforehand and are usually used to detect fractures, cancer, infections and other abnormalities in the bone. Although osteoporosis is more common in older women, men also can develop the condition.
