16 Δεκ 2023 · How to plant Basil plants outside? To get the most out of your basil plants and enjoy them throughout the year, you need to follow these three simple steps to maintain basil outdoors. #1 – Preparing for planting: These steps will help ensure the proper germination of your basil plants.
Basil can be sown outdoors once temperatures warm up in early summer, at a minimum of 15°C (59°F). It needs a sheltered, warm, sunny sowing site, with free-draining soil. Seedlings must be protected from slugs and snails. Basil can also be sown in containers of multi-purpose compost.
11 Ιουλ 2024 · Start basil seeds indoors 4-6 weeks prior to planting outdoors. Plant seed ⅛ inch ( .32 cm.) deep and water lightly. Expect germination in 3-4 weeks. Thin the plants to 3 inches ( 7.62 cm.) apart. Starts should not go outdoors until daytime temperatures are 70 F ( 21 C.) during the day and above 50 F ( 10 C. ) at night.
25 Απρ 2024 · Since the herb thrives in warm temperatures, plant it outside after your last spring frost. If you don't have a yard, plant basil in a container and put it near a window where it has access to a lot of sunlight.
Plant outdoors in early spring as long as temperatures don’t drop below 50°F. If in doubt, plant in a greenhouse, tunnel house or inside. If the temperature drops below 39°F, basil will turn up its toes and die.
Outdoors, basil plants need protection from wind and cold air. Always water with care, ideally before midday, and avoid splashing the leaves. This should help prevent botrytis (powdery mould).
