The Confederate Cipher Disc was a mechanical wheel cipher consisting of two concentric discs, each with the 26 letters of the Latin alphabet, that was used for the encryption of secret messages of the Confederacy during the American Civil War (1861-1865).
The Confederate Cipher Disk is made of brass. The outer disk has a diameter of approx. 2 1/4 inch, whilst the inner disk measures approx 1 1/2 inch. On each of the disks, the alphabet is written out clockwise in the usual order (A-Z).

The cipher disk can be used in one of two ways. The code can be a consistent monoalphabetic substitution for the entire cipher or the disks can be moved periodically throughout the cipher making it polyalphabetic.
12 Οκτ 2022 · The Confederates instead went with a Vigenère cipher, which encrypted text based on the letters of a chosen keyword. A Beardslee telegraph machine. This kind of text is easy to understand and use and was considered unbreakable for 300 years. It uses a metal disc to switch between alphabets based on the chosen keyword.
Cipher Disk. A Confederate cipher disk is also said to be for Vigenere cipher (see, for example, a Crypto Museum site). At the back of the disk is an inscription "F. Labarre" (who created it) and "Richmond VA". Only five are extant today.
