Hydra Island is a small island sitting off the coast of the main island. The island takes its name from the DHARMA Initiative's Hydra, located there. ("Some Like It Hoth") Rousseau's map depicts at least 9 offshore islands. It is unclear which of these represents Hydra Island.
The Hydra is a DHARMA Initiative zoological research station located on the Hydra Island, a few miles offshore of the the main island. The Hydra appears to be one of the larger, if not the largest of the DHARMA facilities: a sprawling collection of different buildings and underground facilities.

When Jack, Kate and Sawyer are taken prisoner by the Others, the trio are kept at the Hydra station and placed in the same large jungle cages that Dharma once used to store animals.

The diameter of the Island has been shown to be a several-days' walk, as demonstrated by the Tailies traveling to join the midsection survivors, by Kate and Sawyer's return from the Hydra Island, and by Kate, Locke, Sayid and Rousseau's journey to The Flame and then to the Barracks.
