22 Ιουν 2024 · Introduction. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and the hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) are the two most serious, acute, and life-threatening hyperglycemic emergencies in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) (1–3).
Hyperglycemia happens when there’s too much sugar (glucose) in your blood. It’s also called high blood sugar or high blood glucose. This happens when your body has too little insulin (a hormone) or if your body can’t use insulin properly (insulin resistance).
Stress hyperglycemia is a transient increase in blood glucose during acute physiological stress in the absence of glucose homeostasis dysfunction. Its's presence has been described in critically ill patients who are subject to many physiological insults.
1 Ιαν 2009 · Pathophysiology. The basic cause of DKA and HHS is insufficient insulin effect. Combined with the insufficiency of insulin effect, there is an increase in counterregulatory hormone levels, including glucagon, cortsol, catecholamines, and growth hormone. Both factors contribute to hyperglycemia.
