1 Μαΐ 2019 · Ida Lewis (February 25, 1842 - October 25, 1911) was lauded as a hero in the 19th and 20th century for her many rescues in the Atlantic Ocean off the shore of Rhode Island. From her own time and for generations after, she was often featured as a strong role model for American girls.
Ida Lewis was best known for her rescue of two soldiers rowing across the harbor to Fort Adams during a snowstorm. A 14-year-old boy was with them to guide their way. The boat capsized in the rough water and the boy disappeared, but the two soldiers clung to the boat. Ida and her younger brother then rowed out and saved the men.

Ida Lewis, the namesake of Arlington National Cemetery’s Lewis Drive, was once known as “the bravest woman in America.” Lewis served as an official lighthouse keeper for the U.S. Lighthouse Service (later absorbed into the Coast Guard) from 1879 until her death, at age 69, in 1911.
23 Μαρ 2021 · Yet another legacy would be the Coast Guard Cutter Ida Lewis. A 175-foot “Keeper Class” coastal buoy tender, commissioned April 12, 1997. She was the first of 14 ships of her class named in honor of famous lighthouse keepers from the U.S. Lighthouse Service.
