Sociologists look beyond the taken-for-granted notions of our social environment to examine the many layers of social meaning in the human experience. Sociologists approach any study of the social world with the understanding that human behavior is not simply the outcome of individual free will.
• Understand what sociology does: study systems, structures, and culture. • Understand how social systems shape human behavior. • Understand the sociological research process, including the major types of evidence sociologists use to examine social systems. • Understand the two major aspects of social systems: Social Structure and Culture
distinguish the sociological approach to explaining human behaviour from psychological and biological approaches; interpret the social world using a variety of sociological theories; and assess evidence to test sociological theories, thus determining the best explanations among them.

SOCI 001-910 (Cross-listed as AFRC002-910): Introduction to Sociology is a survey course designed to orient students to the discipline of sociology. The sociological enterprise is concerned with human behavior and social interaction. Sociologists study the way people interact with each and the world around them.
1. Understand and apply sociological concepts, methods, and theories to the world we live in. 2. Become an effective oral and written communicator of themes that affect society and interpersonal relationships. 3. Critically evaluate social life from a sociological perspective.
3 Αυγ 2014 · COURSE DESCRIPTION. This course is designed to be a broad introduction to the field of sociology. We will encounter some of the most influential theories used by sociologists to think about the social world, and many of the methods sociologists employ to investigate it.
