Bến Tre is a province of Vietnam. It is one of the country's southern provinces, and is situated in the Mekong Delta. It is also famous for its coconuts and the Coconut Religion nationwide. Disconnected from the mainland, the province lies mainly on 2 river islands.

The Battle of Bến Tre took place during the Tet Offensive of the Vietnam War when Vietcong (VC) forces attacked Bến Tre, the capital of Kien Hoa Province, on 31 January 1968. The battle lasted until 5 February when U.S. and South Vietnamese forces ejected the VC who suffered 328 killed.

At the time of the battle, Bên Tre was actually the capital of the Kien Hoa Province, which is the exact same as the Bên Tre Province, just under a different name. On February 5th, 1968, the Vietcong were defeated by US and South Vietnamese forces.
During the Vietnam War, the Ben Tre Province existed under a different name, Kien Hoa (Kiên Hòa). Under attack by the Vietcong who was a Communist revolutionary group, Ben Tre was a part of the Tet Offensive.
The Kien Hoa pacification method, as O’Reilly understood and helped to shape it, reflected the absence of either a compelling national ideology or a charismatic GVN leadership in Saigon. Indeed, one of the features of his stay in Vietnam was the instability of successive governments in Saigon.
