The Library of Congress was founded in 1800. In 1814 its small collection of books was used for kindling by the British soldiers who burned down the Capitol in the War of 1812. A fresh start was made in 1815 with the purchase of the personal library of Thomas Jefferson, who had been president.
This special collection presents children’s books selected from the General and Rare Book Collections at the Library of Congress. The collection includes classic works that are still read by children today, and lesser-known treasures drawn from the Library’s extensive collection of historically significant children’s books.
