The M47 was the U.S. Army's and Marine Corps' primary tank, intended to replace the M26 Pershing and M46 Patton medium tanks. [note 1] The M47 was widely used by U.S. Cold War allies, both SEATO and NATO countries, and was the only Patton series tank that never saw combat while in US service.
The M47 was a relatively short-lived MBT (then called "medium tank" created to replace the M46 Patton/M26 Pershing and the M4 Sherman). It was widely produced to fit the needs of the US Army, US Marines, but also NATO nations as a whole as a stopgap measure before new models could be built locally.
27 Ιουν 2024 · The M47 was the first tank operated by the newly reformed West German Bundeswehr from 1955. They received over 1,100. M47 production ran from July 1951 until November 1953 and 8,576 were built by American Locomotive Company and the Detroit Tank Arsenal.
1 Σεπ 2024 · M47M used the engine and fire control system from the 105mm gun tank M60A1. The engine, Continental's AVDS-1790-2A supercharged diesel, had its exhaust vented through rear louvres like on the M60 , replacing the M47's fender-mounted mufflers.

The engine and transmission are in the back of the tank. Armament on the M47 Patton medium tank consists of a 3.54 inch(90mm) main gun, two 0.3 inch (7.62mm) machine guns – one coaxial and one in the bow – and a 0.5 inch (12.7mm) anti-aircraft gun on the commander’s cupola.
The M-47 was powered by a Continental AV-1790-5B, 12 cylinders, 820 HP, gasoline propelled engine. With a full tank of 882 liters, the M-47 could only run approximately 128km. The main gun was the M36 90mm gun with on M12 optical rangefinder fitted.
