Downloading. The MacTeX-2024 package can be obtained over the internet for free by clicking on the following link: MacTeX.pkg [ approximately 5.7G - 13 March 2024 ] This link points to a "multiplexer" site which parcels out requests to various up-to-date CTAN mirrors.
MacTeX (and by extension TeX Live) are so big because they contain everything up to, and including the kitchen sink, then heaps on yet more stuff. Odds are, out of that 1.3 GB archive you will only use 300-400 MB worth of files on a regular basis.
