It might also be worth noting that merry is used in phrases like play merry hell , play Merry Andrew and the alternative meaning of merry (meaning 4) meaning somewhat inebriated, which are all short-term (one hopes) states of affairs.

However, the "we wish you a" is dropped completely when giving an oral well-wishing. Generally, one simply exclaims: Merry Christmas! and Happy New Year!
I'd generally write "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!", or maybe possibly "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year." Of course, in these politically-correct times, the correct greeting is "Happy Unspecified Holiday to you, unless the very idea of holidays offends you, in which case please pretend I said nothing and walked past you in silence".
Happy New Year! is a sentence by itself, and thus Happy should be capitalized. It would not be necessary to capitalize "birthday" if you were saying "Happy birthday" instead of "Happy New Year". I wish you a merry Christmas and happy New Year. is how I'd capitalize the words if they weren't being used on their own, but rather in a longer sentence.

Of course, it might be seen as insensitive by some, but a very good option seems to be the phrase "Merry Christmas, and a happy New Year.". This is a fairly good phrase to use if you want to: Make it clear that you believe in Jesus Christ. Inform the listener that you wish them good cheer throughout the dark month of December.

It's merely an assumption, but a safe one, that the rise of evangelicals in the political sphere has contributed to the resurgent debate about the phrase's political correctness, and to the assertion that its suppression represents an assault on Christian values.
27 Δεκ 2012 · If you're unsure then something like "I trust you enjoyed the break and are keen to start on the new year's projects" can avoid mentioning a particular holiday without sounding like you're avoiding it (there is a minority who consider anybody enjoying a holiday near Christmas that isn't Christmas to be a "war on Christmas" and get upset about avoiding being overly specific).
