Let’s start with what used to be the most import index for the met market, the Australian Coking Coal Futures. I use data from Barchart.com, link here. This chart shows the approximate settling price of each monthly contract as well as the current forward prices for each future contract.
Prices. The met and thermal coal price relationship shows a return to normal conditions. During the energy crisis in 2022, thermal coal traded at much higher prices than ever before, pushed by tight fundamentals, very high prices of the main competing fuel (natural gas), and a war premium.

Prices for steel and diesel used in coal mining declined in 2020. The cost structure of coal mining is determined mostly by operating expenses such as mining cash costs (e.g. labour, fuel, taxes and royalties) and transportation expenditures (e.g. inland transportation, port fees and seaborne freight rates).
