Even though he was very rich, Midas thought that his greatest happiness was provided by gold. His avarice was such that he used to spend his days counting his golden coins! Occasionally he used to cover his body with gold objects, as if he wanted to bath in them.
This collector's coin depicts Midas, King of Phrygia. Honored with the gift of turning everything he touches into pure gold thanks to the god Dionysus. The 10-euro silver coin features selective fine-gold gilding echoing the myth.
It is therefore not surprising that myths and legends have arisen related to the special qualities of gold, of which the “Golden Touch of Midas” is probably the most famous example. The earliest reference to the Golden Touch occurs in Aristotle’s Politics (1257b, 4th century BCE):
