The smooth earth snake (Virginia valeriae) is a species of nonvenomous natricine colubrid snake native to the eastern half of the United States.
In Maryland, this snake occurs in Garrett County, where it is rarely seen. This species is ranked as S1-S2, and is considered state-endangered and vulnerable (Maryland DNR site). There are 11 records in the project database. View taxon at iNaturalist. GA.
Characteristics: Ground color of this 30 to 36” garter snake is dark slate gray to jet black. The 3 stripes are usually well defined. Dorsal stripe is orangish to white, lateral stripes are yellow.
