31 Αυγ 2023 · Breathing is one of the four components of respiration, the other three being gas diffusion, gas transport and regulation. The pathway towards the lungs is provided by airways and together, these components form the respiratory system, which is located inside the thoracic or chest cavity.
Muscles that are helpful in expanding the thoracic cavity are called the inspiratory muscles because they help in inhalation. Those that compress the thoracic cavity are called expiratory muscles and they induce exhalation.
In general, two muscle groups are used during normal inspiration: the diaphragm and the external intercostal muscles. Additional muscles can be used if a bigger breath is required. When the diaphragm contracts, it moves inferiorly toward the abdominal cavity, creating a larger thoracic cavity and more space for the lungs.
16 Ιουλ 2023 · Process of Passive Expiration. Expiration is the phase of ventilation in which air is expelled from the lungs. It is initiated by the relaxation of the inspiratory muscles: Diaphragm – relaxes to return to its resting position, reducing the superior/inferior dimension of the thoracic cavity.
9 Οκτ 2024 · There are five muscles that make up the thoracic cage; the intercostals (external, internal and innermost), subcostals, and transversus thoracis. These muscles act to change the volume of the thoracic cavity during respiration. There are some other muscles that do not comprise the thoracic wall, but do attach to it.
The muscles of respiration are the muscles that contribute to inhalation and exhalation, by aiding in the expansion and contraction of the thoracic cavity. The diaphragm and, to a lesser extent, the intercostal muscles drive respiration during quiet breathing.
31 Οκτ 2023 · During the process of inhalation, the lung volume expands as a result of the contraction of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles (the muscles that are connected to the rib cage), thus expanding the thoracic cavity.
