Mild steels and conventional higher strength steels, such as HSLA grades, have an n-value which stays relatively constant with deformation. The n-value is strongly related to the yield strength of the conventional steels (Figure 3).
The determination of the hardening exponents to ISO 10275, also referred to as the n-value is ascertained on flat metal specimens such as sheets or strips. The n-value can be calculated from the raw data (force and extension) of the tensile test (e.g to EN 10002-1, ISO 6892, ASTM E8) with direct strain measurement.

The value of the strain hardening exponent lies between 0 and 1, with a value of 0 implying a perfectly plastic solid and a value of 1 representing a perfectly elastic solid. Most metals have an -value between 0.10 and 0.50.
