1 Σεπ 2023 · General research priorities for the treatment of neonatal seizures include (1) pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies for term and preterm neonates; (2) appropriate dose-finding studies for new ASMs as well as safety studies for new ASMs and existing ASMs if higher doses are used; and (3) RCTs aiming to license further ASMs in neonates.
Treatment options for neonatal seizures remain limited despite their relatively common occurrence (2–4 per 1000 North American births, 19–58 per 1000 in <1500 gram birth weight infants:), 1 – 3 even with the introduction of several new antiepileptic medications over the last two decades.
