The state of California was divided into three numbering plan areas (NPAs) with distinct area codes: 213, 415, and 916, for the southern, central, and northern parts of the state, respectively. [1] As of July 2023, California has 38 active area codes.
This is a list of future area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) that are in the planning stages for relief of central office code exhaustion in the given numbering plan areas (NPAs). California currently has 40 area codes. A new area code is added to a geographic area when there are no more three-digit prefixes available in the existing area code. Area codes are added in the form of a geographic split or an overlay. California has added fourteen area codes using the overlay method since 2006.

23 Φεβ 2024 · Today there are 10 area codes in L.A. County, and in about eight months, there will be an 11th: 738, which will cover the same territory now served by 323 and the much-diminished 213.
530/837 Area Codes. The CPUC began the process to introduce a new area code to the 530 area codes, as the supply of available prefixes in the 530 area code region is expected to be depleted by September 2025.
17 Μαΐ 2024 · A new area code is coming to Northern California to supplement the 530 code, which stretches from the edge of the Bay Area to the state's borders with Oregon and Nevada.
