The New Orleans Fire Department provides fire protection and first responder emergency medical services to the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. The department serves 378,715 people living in a 350 square miles (910 km 2 ) area, including 170 square miles (440 km 2 ) of water.
On December 15, 1891 the New Orleans Fire Department came into existence as a paid department. This decision insured one the most culturally rich and historically relevant cities in all of the Americas had the safety and security of a prompt response from professionally trained firefighters.

September, 1840, Mayor Freret promulgated instructions that thereafter the bells should be rung first in the usual manner for two minutes, this to be followed with separate and distinct single, double, or treble taps, according as the fire was in the First, Second or Third Municipal District.
The members of the company are as follows : Captain Patrick T. Burke, a native of New Orleans, was born Oct. 22, 1861. He joined the Volunteer Department March 6, 1885, as a member of Irad Ferry No. 12.
