15 Οκτ 2020 · Mechanism of Action. Sodium nitroprusside is a water-soluble salt comprised of ferrous iron complexed with nitric oxide (NO) and five cyanide ions. Acting as a prodrug, SNP reacts with sulfhydryl groups on erythrocytes (as well as albumin and other proteins) to produce nitric oxide (NO).
Mechanism of action [ edit ] As a result of its breakdown to nitric oxide (NO), sodium nitroprusside has potent vasodilating effects on arterioles and venules (arterial more than venous), whereas other nitrates exhibit more selectivity for veins (e.g. nitroglycerin ).

The SNP was administered intravenously by a continuous infusion at a dose of 10 to 400 μg/min (without bolus) as needed to improve hemodynamics (Table 1). Titration of SNP dose was based on achieving a target MAP of 65 to 70 mm Hg.
