Several of my friends use the New International Version (which's also closer to the idea-for-idea end of the spectrum), and none of us mind at all. So, go ahead and read the New Living Translation! The Bible has a whole lot of insights in it, and I hope God uses them to help you.
Responding to criticism of the NLT, Blomberg explained that the version is for "kids or very poor adult readers," and he suggested that readers of the NLT should move on to a more accurate version when they are able:

The New Living Translation (NLT) is a translation of the Bible in contemporary English. Published in 1996 by Tyndale House Foundation, the NLT was created "by 90 leading Bible scholars." [4] The NLT relies on recently published critical editions of the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. [1]
