Occoquan, which grew around a mill constructed in 1755, was the site of an important river crossing for troops during the Civil War, as the principal road between Alexandria and Fredericksburg passed through the town. From this point a pontoon bridge stretched across the Occoquan River in June 1863.
During the Civil War, the post office passed letters and packages between North and South. River silting reduced ship traffic to Occoquan and ended its days as a port, as did the shift in traffic to railroads.
It was destroyed during the Civil War by the Union Army. Early 1800's Occoquan consisted of: 50 dwellings, bake houses, several mercantile shops, saw mills, a cotton factory, hotels and lodging establishments, 2 flour and grist mills, eaterys and barrooms, forges, active shipping of railroad ties by river barge.
23 Δεκ 2022 · The hotel achieved fame in the Civil War as the headquarters for Confederate General Wade Hampton during several skirmishes with Union troops in the area. Union forces were able to fire upon Occoquan from an elevated camp across the river on the Fairfax side and succeeded in destroying the Janney’s cotton mill.
During the Civil War, Alexandria and Washington were blockaded and Occoquan was one of the last post offices in which mail could be sent between the north and south. 1809 A stage coach fine was established by Nathaniel Ellicott of Occoquan to travel between Alexandria and Dumfries.
28 Ιουν 2014 · During the Civil War, both Union and Confederate forces considered Wolf Run Shoals an essential crossing point on the Occoquan River through 1963. Confederate regiments camped on the south side of the shoals and posted pickets there from the winter of 1861–1862 until March 1862.
