Amtrak Virginia trains run between Washington, D.C., and one of four southern termini: Richmond, Newport News, Norfolk, or Roanoke. Trains generally continue north from D.C. along the Northeast Corridor, providing one-seat rides from Virginia to Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston.
The Virginia-led initiative, called Transforming Rail in Virginia (TRIV), is a $3.7 billion investment to improve passenger, commuter and freight rail in Virginia with the expansion of the Northeast Corridor into Virginia, creating a vital connection between the Northeast and Southeast corridors.
The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) is a commuter rail service that operates Monday through Friday, from the Northern Virginia suburbs to Washington, D.C. VRE trains primarily travel northbound in the morning, towards Washington, and southbound during the evening, towards Manassas (along I-66), and Fredericksburg (along I-95).
Along the Northeast Regional route in Virginia, a total of eight state-sponsored, roundtrip trains run daily through grant agreements with Amtrak. These trains then continue onto Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, offering a one-seat ride to destinations including Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston.
