Percy LeBaron Spencer (July 19, 1894 – September 8, 1970) was an American physicist, electrical engineer and inventor who became known as the inventor of the microwave oven. [1]
23 Σεπ 2020 · Percy Spencer was an engineer testing a military gadget called the magnetron. During the test, Spencer put his hand in his pocket and realized his snack had melted. Wondering how the microwave was invented?
Following up on these simple experiments, Spencer soon realized that a rectangular metal box would make a fine resonant cavity for cooking. Recognizing the commercial potential, Raytheon filed a patent for a microwave cooking process on October 8, 1945, and the Radarange hit the market in 1946.
3 Οκτ 2024 · On Oct. 8, 1945, Raytheon Manufacturing Company filed a patent for what's now a staple kitchen appliance in homes around the world: the microwave oven. The appliance, invented by Raytheon...
Spencer and Raytheon put much effort into developing the microwave oven to be used for cooking purposes and filed for a patent on October 8, 1945. He was later awarded the patent on January 24, 1950. The first commercial microwave oven was called “Radarange,” marketed in 1947.
In 1945, Spencer created a device to cook food using microwave radiation. Raytheon saw the possibilities of this, and after acquiring Amana Refrigeration in 1965, was able to sell microwave ovens on a large scale.
Spencer’s most famous work, the discovery of microwave cooking, was an accidental outcome of his magnetron research. As noted in Spencer’s brief Invention at Play profile, in 1945 he was in the lab standing near a magnetron and noticed that a candy bar in his pocket had melted. Out of curiosity, he placed popcorn kernels by the magnetron ...
