Euro Coins catalog. The European currency was introduced on January 1, 2002, but coins were minted earlier. Therefore, in Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Finland and France, you can find euro and euro cent coins with the dates 1999, 2000 and 2001, although in these years the national currency was still in circulation in the EU countries.
The euro coins have a common side and a national side. The national side indicates the issuing country. The common sides of the coins were designed by Mr Luc Luycx of the Royal Belgian Mint. They show images of the European Union or of Europe and symbolise the unity of the EU.
Coins minted from 1999 to 2006 depicted only the EU15, rather than the entire European continent, which is on coins minted after 2007. The common side of the €1 and €2 coins depict the denomination on the left, the currency, map of Europe and twelve stars on the right.
