This soft, comforting bread is a mainstay among Portuguese bread lovers, especially at Christmas (and Easter, when it encloses a boiled egg). In this country, the round, mahogany-colored loaf often includes subtle hints of both lemon and vanilla.
Pão doce(sweet bread) is common throughout Portugal but in the islands of the Azores it’s called massa sovadameaning “beaten dough” because of its long kneading time. The recipe presented here is based on Azorean recipes. There are of course recipes and variations from the mainland.

Portuguese sweet bread is a soft, slightly sweet roll that is easy to make and a perfect side to your dinner, as a bun for sliders, or to eat just by itself. Definitely one of my favorite types of bread.
