The first way to dispose of an American Flag is to hold a Flag burning ceremony at your home or other private location. Before conducting a Flag burning ceremony, note the material of your Flag and the local fire ordinances.
Many American Legion posts conduct disposal ceremonies of unserviceable flags, especially on Flag Day (June 14). Such ceremonies are particularly dignified and solemn occasions for the retirement of unserviceable flags. Take your old flags to your local American Legion post.
