Lake Brienz (German: Brienzersee) is a lake just north of the Alps, in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It has a length of about 14 kilometres (8.7 mi), a width of 2.8 kilometres (1.7 mi) and a maximum depth of 260 metres (850 ft).
19 Αυγ 2024 · Lake Brienz is known for its surreal turquoise waters, which are owed to sediment particles brought into the lake by glacial waters from Lütschine and the Aare river. That’s the main reason why the lake’s color is so surreal, but it’s also partly because the lake is so incredibly clean.
The Aare is the longest wholly Swiss river. It originates from the Oberaar glacier in the eastern Bernese Alps, flows through lakes Brienz and Thun, passes by the federal capital of Bern, is channelled into Lake Biel, follows the southern foot of the Jura range and finally flows into the Rhine at Koblenz, in north-western Switzerland.
Not directly located on Lake Brienz, but a bit further up the river Aare (feeder of Lake Brienz), Aare Gorge, known locally as Aareschlucht is a stunning geological formation and a testament to the raw power of water over thousands of years, carving a path through limestone rock.
A little past Meiringen, near Brienz, the river expands into Lake Brienz. Near the west end of the lake it indirectly receives its first important tributary, the Lütschine, by the Lake of Brienz. It then runs across the swampy plain of the Bödeli (Swiss German diminutive for ground) between Interlaken and Unterseen before flowing into Lake Thun.
Up on the Diemtigbergli above Diemtigen, a popular place for excursions. The turquoise Lake Brienz and neighbouring Lake Thun are set amid the spectacular mountain scenery of the Bernese Oberland. Passengers aboard the “Lötschberg” paddle steamer from the Belle Epoque (built in 1914) are inspired by its wonderfully nostalgic atmosphere.
