The Reign of Terror was a period of massacres and executions in France from 1792 to 1794, during the French Revolution. It was influenced by Enlightenment thought, threats of foreign invasion, and the ideology of the Committee of Public Safety, led by Robespierre.

According to folklore, the Terror was a deadly period where Maximilien Robespierre, the Committee of Public Safety and the Revolutionary Tribunals condemned thousands of people to die under the falling blade of the guillotine.
Robespierre, having been branded a failed dictator by the right and a moderate by the left, saw his popular support collapse. Ultimately, he was unable to kill his rivals faster than they could unite against him.
Robespierre replied to the plea for an end to the Terror, justifying the collective authority of the National Convention, administrative centralisation, and the purging of local authorities. He said he had to avoid two cliffs: indulgence and severity.
