The s orbital is a spherically-shaped region describing where an electron can be found, within a certain degree of probability. The shape of the orbital depends on the quantum numbers associated with an energy state. All s orbitals have l = m = 0, but the value of n can vary.
Not all electrons inhabit s orbitals (in fact, very few electrons live in s orbitals). At the first energy level, the only orbital available to electrons is the 1s orbital, but at the second level, as well as a 2s orbital, there are also orbitals called 2p orbitals.
Orbits with \(l = 0\) are called \(s\) orbitals. Although this is not where the letter comes from, it’s useful to think of these as “spherical” orbitals, because they are spherically symmetric. However, they aren’t just spheres!
