The SAE steel grades system is a standard alloy numbering system (SAE J1086 – Numbering Metals and Alloys) for steel grades maintained by SAE International. In the 1930s and 1940s, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and SAE were both involved in efforts to standardize such a numbering system for steels.
Alloy steels and carbon steels can be designated with specific grades by a four-digit AISI/SAE numerical index system. The system is based on the chemical compositions of the steels and alloys. Example AISI/SAE No. 1020

standard steel, a range of 0.15 to 0.35%, inclusive, is generally used. Such a steel is identified by inserting the letter “L” between the second and third numeral of the AISI number.
The AISI/SAE system uses a 4-digit number to identify the chemical composition of alloy and carbon steels. The first digit indicates the main alloying elements, the second digit the top grade elements, and the last two digits show the carbon content in hundredths of a percent.
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) designates SAE steel grades. These are four digit numbers which represent chemical composition standards for steel specifications. The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) originally started a very similar system.
