Saint Lawrence (died 258, Rome [Italy]; feast day August 10) was one of the most venerated Roman martyrs, celebrated for his Christian valour. He is the patron saint of the poor and of cooks.
Saint Lawrence or Laurence (Latin: Laurentius, lit. "laurelled"; 31 December 225 [1] – 10 August 258) was one of the seven deacons of the city of Rome under Pope Sixtus II who were martyred in the persecution of the Christians that the Roman emperor Valerian ordered in 258.

Four days after this pope was put to death, Lawrence and four clerics suffered martyrdom, probably during the persecution of the Emperor Valerian. Legendary details of Lawrence’s death were known to Damasus, Prudentius, Ambrose, and Augustine.
