V8 codes are stamped on a pad just forward of the right side (passenger) cylinder head. 6 cylinder engines are stamped on the passenger side of the block behind the distributor.

Date codes are the letter, 1 or 2 digits for the day, and 1 digit for the year such as J 25 7 would be October 25, 1967. One exception seems to be the 1970 engine blocks being dated as month letter, 1- or 2-digit date, and a 2-letter year number (70).
1 Ιαν 2024 · They tell you where the engine was assembled, the production date, and the suffix code. Remember, these numbers might be machined off when they deck a block. They are less important when you’re trying to quickly identify if it’s a 283 cubic inch motor or a 400 cubic inch one.
10 Φεβ 2023 · To identify this engine, we used a combination of block casting numbers, block suffix code, block casting date code, head casting numbers and date codes, crankshaft casting numbers, and intake manifold casting numbers.
19 Σεπ 2013 · The Chevrolet big-block is a visibly larger series of Chevy’s V8 engines that were developed and used in the 1950s through the 1970s. Many engine blocks of the same generation look alike. Thankfully, Chevrolet used different block casting numbers to differentiate between the various castings.
Small Block Chevy Suffix Codes: CE - CMJ. GM body designation. All these are identified here. Quickly, A = Chevelle, F = Camaro, X = Nova. If you're looking at the engine code - this is already known.
