In word problems and in other tricky circumstances, it may be most useful to measure from peak to peak. The following three waves have different periods.

Finding the characteristics of a sinusoidal wave. To find the amplitude, wavelength, period, and frequency of a sinusoidal wave, write down the wave function in the form \(y(x, t)=A \sin (k x-\omega t+\phi)\). The amplitude can be read straight from the equation and is equal to \(A\).
The term sinusoidal is used to describe a curve, referred to as a sine wave or a sinusoid, that exhibits smooth, periodic oscillation. Sinusoids occur often in math, physics, engineering, signal processing and many other areas.
