Two forms of soft-tissue biopsy exist: needle biopsy and open biopsy. Needle biopsies involve the passing of a needle into a mass for tissue sampling. When possible, the needle tract should pass through the muscle that is in contact with the tumor and away from major blood vessels or nerves.
